Video: Almirón scores but misses penalty as Atlanta United draw with Inter Miami

Miguel Almirón scored for Atlanta United but missed a penalty in a 2-2 draw with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer on Saturday night.

Inter Miami appeared set to secure another win after its 7-1 victory over Montreal, but Breel Embolo equalized for Atlanta in the 87th minute. The result extended a disappointing night for Miami, which could not capitalize on Nashville’s draw with New York City FC.

Lionel Messi played all 90 minutes in his first match after announcing his retirement from the national team. He assisted Casemiro’s 32nd-minute goal from a corner. Almirón levelled the match before halftime after collecting a rebound from goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair, and Luis Suárez later completed a coordinated Inter Miami move.

Suárez, 39, now has 54 goals for Inter Miami, making him the second-highest scorer in the franchise’s history. The match began 90 minutes late because of a thunderstorm in the area.

Atlanta received two penalties. Almirón failed to convert the first early in the second half, while the second went to Switzerland international Embolo, who made no mistake. Miami remains 10 points behind Nashville in the Supporters’ Shield race and is awaiting the arrival of Cristian “Kily” González.
