Vietnam Authorities Warn Tourists of Wild Monkeys After Attacks

The Phu Yen province is facing a growing concern as wild monkeys, once a picturesque attraction, have begun posing a threat to tourists along the scenic coastal road near Mui Dien.

Warning signs of danger, reminding tourists not to approach or feed the monkeys.

In response to multiple tourist bites reported in late April, Hoa Xuan commune authorities have taken swift action by erecting warning signs. These signs explicitly caution visitors against approaching or feeding the monkeys, aiming to prevent further incidents.

The commune is coordinating with forest rangers to monitor and drive away monkeys, preventing them from affecting residents and tourists.

The local government, in collaboration with forest rangers, is actively working on strategies to manage the monkey population and mitigate their impact on both residents and visitors. During busy periods, especially in the afternoons when tourists flock to the area for photos and sightseeing, mobile loudspeakers will be deployed to issue warnings along the route.

Wild monkeys, although appearing friendly, still pose a risk of sudden attack, especially when provoked, competing for food, or when tourists get too close.

This situation highlights a delicate balance between promoting tourism and ensuring public safety. While the natural beauty of the Mui Dien area draws many visitors, the increasing boldness of the wild monkey population presents a challenge that requires careful management to maintain the region's appeal without compromising visitor well-being.

If bitten or scratched by a monkey, immediately wash the wound under running water with soap for at least 15 minutes, then disinfect and go to the nearest medical facility for timely treatment.
