Vietnam: Man arrested for assault after nearly 10 years on the run

Dao Xuan Nghi, 59, has been arrested and detained by police in Da Nang, Vietnam, nearly a decade after allegedly assaulting an individual and going into hiding. The arrest aims to resume investigations and process the case according to the law.

The incident occurred on January 24, 2017, stemming from a debt dispute between Tran Thanh Cuong, 46, and Nghi's brother, Dao Xuan Tuong, 55. Following an initial altercation that was broken up by bystanders, Nghi reportedly sought revenge on Cuong. Later that day, Nghi pursued Cuong, sprayed him in the eyes with dish soap, and then repeatedly punched and kicked him until he lost consciousness.

Cuong was hospitalized, and medical evaluations determined a 31% bodily injury rate. Nghi fled the area after the assault. In May 2017, police initiated a case for intentional injury, but it was suspended due to Nghi's unknown whereabouts. Following a directive to review suspended cases, the investigation was reopened in March 2026, leading to Nghi's arrest warrant in May 2026.

Nghi was located and summoned by police on July 23, 2026, after returning to his hometown. He confessed to the assault during questioning. The Da Nang City Police are continuing to process the case.
