Viking drops points in title race with draw against Aalesund

Viking stumbled in the Norwegian Eliteserien title race after a 1-1 draw against relegation-threatened Aalesund on Sunday evening. The result, achieved despite two spectacular goals, means Viking now trails league leaders Bodø/Glimt by a single point, although they have played one less match.

The match saw Viking without several key players, including the injured Henrik Falchener and the suspended duo Henrik Heggheim and Zlatko Tripić. This absence was felt against an Aalesund side fighting to avoid relegation. Despite early chances for Viking, it was Aalesund who took control for periods in the first half. However, Viking secured a lead just before halftime when Kristoffer Askildsen curled a stunning free-kick into the top corner from 17 meters.

The advantage was short-lived. Barely twenty seconds into the second half, Aalesund captain Mathias Christensen unleashed a powerful volley from long range, leveling the score and shifting the momentum. Viking pushed for a winner, with several players having opportunities, including Askildsen who had another free-kick attempt from a similar position that went wide. Ultimately, neither team could find a decisive goal, leaving Viking with a point that felt like a loss in their pursuit of the championship.
