Vilnius activists protest planned development along Neris River banks

Climate activists in Vilnius are organizing a protest on the Žvėrynas Bridge to draw attention to the protection of natural territories. They are calling for urban development that preserves the natural banks of the Neris River.

The activists express significant concern over ongoing and planned projects along the river. These include a new rowing base in Žirmūnai, a private sauna complex in Vingis Park, the development of Winter Port, and a residential housing block on Žirmūnai Street.

"The Neris River banks are one of the most important parts of Vilnius's natural framework, protecting biodiversity, cooling the city, and serving recreational purposes for all Vilnius residents," stated Viltė Zaveckaitė, a member of the climate movement "Fridays for Future." "The city must develop with nature, not at its expense."

The organizers are urging the Vilnius authorities to conduct a comprehensive environmental impact assessment for all proposed projects. They also call for the inclusion of independent experts and the public in the decision-making process to ensure a balanced approach to urban planning.
