Vilnius Center Undergoes Major Street Renovation, New Bicycle Lane to Be Added

Vilnius is embarking on a significant capital renovation of Jogailos Street, a vital artery in the city center, promising a more modern and accessible urban environment. The project focuses on enhancing infrastructure for all users, including the introduction of a new 2.5-meter-wide bicycle lane on the western side of the street.

This new bike path will connect existing cycling routes on Gediminas Avenue and Islandijos Street, creating a safer and more efficient network for cyclists. They will no longer need to navigate mixed traffic with cars and buses. The street will maintain its one-way traffic flow from Gediminas Avenue towards Pamėnkalnio Street, with only public transport permitted to travel in the opposite direction. An additional lane for public transport will be established near the Islandijos bus stop.

The renovation also includes updating the carriageway, installing new sidewalks, tactile surfaces, and lowered curbs with convenient ramps to ensure accessibility for everyone. Importantly, the project will not alter the street's historical structure, thereby preserving its unique urban character. All design decisions have been coordinated with cultural heritage institutions, given Jogailos Street's location within Vilnius's Old Town and historic area.

Reflecting heritage recommendations, granite paving stones have been selected for the bicycle lane, sidewalks, and parking areas. This choice aims to maintain a cohesive architectural appearance for the street, harmonizing with Gediminas Avenue. The capital renovation works are slated for completion by the end of the current year.
