Vilnius Mayor Mourns Award-Winning Teen Killed in Fatal Crash

Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas expressed deep sorrow following the death of a 19-year-old award recipient in a tragic car accident. The young woman had been honored just the previous day at a ceremony celebrating the city's top high school graduates.

"Sometimes the same day in Vilnius can be both very bright and the darkest," Benkunskas wrote, reflecting on the stark contrast between the celebratory event and the fatal crash. He extended his profound condolences to the victim's family, the school community, and all who knew her.

The accident occurred on July 23 around 2:30 p.m. in the village of Ažulaukė, Vilnius region. The 19-year-old driver of a BMW 116 was attempting to overtake a Ford Galaxy when her vehicle collided head-on with an oncoming garbage truck. The impact also struck the Ford Galaxy.

The truck veered into a ditch, while the BMW driver became trapped in her vehicle. Although initially conscious, she succumbed to her injuries around 4:15 p.m. while being transported by ambulance. The drivers of the Ford Galaxy and the truck were unharmed. Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash, and a preliminary investigation has been launched.

Five of them had even received 5 maximum scores in their final exams. Unfortunately, the life of one of them ended in tragedy. This is an extremely painful accident; I cannot even imagine what the relatives are going through right now. I extend my deepest condolences to the entire family, the school community, those who knew her, and all who mourn.
