Vilnius-Panevėžys highway section reopens after repairs

The Vilnius-Panevėžys highway, a key artery in Lithuania, has seen significant progress in its infrastructure renewal. A nearly 4-kilometer stretch near Širvintos, from kilometer 45.20 to 49.17, has undergone major physical repairs, including new asphalt paving and road markings.

Traffic in the Vilnius-Panevėžys direction is now utilizing the freshly laid asphalt. "Via Lietuva," the state enterprise responsible for road management, announced that while the main physical work is finished, temporary speed limits remain in place on this section due to ongoing finalization of traffic organization. Protective barriers on the left side of the road are being dismantled and are expected to be removed by the end of August.

Starting Monday, traffic will be fully restored in both directions on this segment. "Via Lietuva" CEO Martynas Gedaminskas stated that all traffic organization work, including removing temporary passages and installing new road signs, should be completed by September 11. He expressed gratitude to drivers for their patience and urged continued attention to temporary restrictions and signs.

The contract for this specific section's repair, carried out by AB „Kauno tiltai,“ was valued at over 2.2 million euros including VAT. This is part of broader infrastructure upgrades on the A2 highway, which also include reconstruction of several viaducts and ongoing road surface repairs on other sections.

The most important physical work on this section of the A2 highway has already been completed – new asphalt has been laid, road markings have been done, and drivers can already use the renovated road section. From next week, the work related to traffic organization will also be completed – traffic on the section will be opened in both directions, so drivers will be able to use two lanes in the direction of Panevėžys–Vilnius. Until then, we ask drivers for their attention and to observe temporary traffic restrictions and road signs, and at the same time, we are grateful to them for their patience.
