Water trickling from the tap? It's not always due to failures

Several districts in Warsaw experienced water outages and reduced pressure recently, with pipe bursts disrupting supply to numerous residential buildings, offices, and commercial outlets. Incidents near Wilcza and Poznańska streets affected 15 blocks, four office buildings, a kindergarten, and 25 commercial units. Another failure occurred in Gocław, impacting three high-rise buildings. These were attributed to ruptured water mains.

No significant increase in the number of failures has been observed, either during the previous or the last heatwave.

However, water utility companies in other major Polish cities, including Katowice, Lublin, and Wrocław, report that the recent heatwaves have not led to a statistically significant increase in water infrastructure failures. In Katowice, four pipeline failures were recorded and repaired during hot weather, but these did not cause major supply disruptions and were attributed to the existing technical condition of the network. Officials emphasized that the number of incidents remained within the usual average.

Waterworks representatives acknowledge that extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, present challenges for the water supply system. Yet, they indicate that severe cold weather generally poses a greater threat to the integrity of underground water infrastructure than summer heat. For instance, Warsaw's MPWiK noted that while summer heatwaves are demanding, they do not typically result in more frequent failures than other periods.

In the summer period, including heatwaves, we do not record a higher number of water network failures than usual.

Similarly, Lublin's MPWiK and Wrocław's water company reported no unusual surge in operational failures during the recent heat. They confirmed that no mass events or situations threatening the continuity of water supply to residents occurred. Gdańsk Water Company also stated its network remains stable, with any recent work being routine maintenance unrelated to the heatwave.
