Water volume in the North Aral Sea increases

The North Aral Sea is experiencing a significant recovery, with its water volume now exceeding 23 billion cubic meters. According to the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, approximately 1.2 billion cubic meters of water have been channeled into the sea via the Syr Darya River since October 1, 2025.

To preserve the North Aral Sea, the ministry is implementing a number of projects, including the automation of water accounting in the Syr Darya River basin and the reconstruction of hydraulic structures. Cooperation with neighboring countries is also being strengthened.

During the current growing season, the North Aral Sea is receiving 14 cubic meters of water per second. Projections indicate this flow will gradually increase to between 100 and 150 cubic meters per second by the end of the season. The current total water volume stands at an impressive 23.4 billion cubic meters.

To ensure the long-term preservation of the North Aral Sea, the ministry is actively engaged in several key projects. These include the automation of water accounting systems within the Syr Darya River basin and the reconstruction of crucial hydraulic structures. Furthermore, the ministry is enhancing cooperation with neighboring nations. Notably, an agreement was signed last year with the Republic of Uzbekistan for the joint management and rational use of transboundary water bodies, following a decade of negotiations.

These efforts align with broader regional initiatives. In April, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev chaired a meeting of the Council of Heads of Founding States of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea. During the meeting, President Tokayev acknowledged the positive outcomes achieved through collaborative efforts aimed at restoring the North Aral Sea's ecosystem.
