Whistleblower released after nearly 2 months in detention

A South Sudanese whistleblower, Athorbey Al-Gaddhaffy-Dit, has been released after nearly two months of detention in the South Sudanese capital, Juba. His family confirmed his return to Nairobi, Kenya, on Saturday, stating that he is currently receiving medical attention following a deterioration of his health during his confinement.

Al-Gaddhaffy-Dit, who also holds Kenyan citizenship, was reportedly seized by armed, masked individuals in early June after leaving a casino on the outskirts of Nairobi. His wife had filed a police report at the time, citing witness accounts of the abduction.

Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi mentioned in June that Al-Gaddhaffy-Dit had shared information with him in April concerning allegations of high-level corruption within South Sudan. The South Sudanese government has consistently denied accusations of systematic human rights abuses and widespread corruption. Officials from both Kenya and South Sudan stated in June that they were unaware of Al-Gaddhaffy-Dit's disappearance.
