Who is Pujith Jayasundara?

Pujith Jayasundara, who was appointed Sri Lanka's 34th Inspector General of Police on April 20, 2016, is a prominent figure in the country's police service. He held the position of IGP until his suspension in the aftermath of the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.

Jayasundara, born in Kurunegala, received his primary education at Bogamuwa Mahamukalankaya Thaksala Maha Vidyalaya. He later attended Ibbagamuwa Central College and then Dharmaraja College in Kandy. After completing his school education, he pursued higher studies at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, graduating with a second-class upper division in Bachelor of Commerce.

He joined the Sri Lanka Police Service as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1985. Before his appointment as IGP, Jayasundara served for a long period as a Senior Deputy Inspector General. He also held various other ranks and served in numerous provinces across the island, including a tenure as the Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Colombo District.

Known as a skilled investigator, Pujith Jayasundara also served as the head of the Police Narcotics Bureau during his career. His tenure as IGP was marked by various activities that kept him in the public eye.
