Why police ordered Abuja stadium closure

The Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja has been ordered closed by the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters due to a planned protest by members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

Stadium management issued a notice on Monday night, stating that all entrances would be closed from August 3, 2026, until further directives from the police. This closure has halted all sporting activities within the main bowl and Package B of the complex, impacting athletes, football clubs, and the general public who use the facility for sports and recreation.

A source indicated that the precautionary measure was taken to prevent any breakdown of law and order, as the Shiite group intended to stage a protest at the stadium. The IMN had reportedly requested permission to use the stadium facilities, but their request was denied due to security concerns.

The stadium premises are under heavy security, with personnel and vehicles from the Nigerian Army, Police Force, and other security agencies present. This action follows recent protests by the IMN in Abuja and other parts of Nigeria, some of which have led to clashes with security agencies. The group has previously expressed solidarity with Iran and condemned perceived US-Israel aggression.
