Wildfire Spreads from Hesse into Bavarian Border Region

A significant wildfire near Rodenbach in Germany's Hesse state has crossed into the neighboring Bavarian border region, prompting a large-scale firefighting operation involving forces from both states. Police helicopters from Bavaria assisted in extinguishing the blaze in the neighboring state, while a Hessian police helicopter also participated. The fire has already consumed tens of thousands of square meters, and its exact size is still being determined due to the dynamic nature of the situation.

Firefighters are facing considerable challenges, including deep-seated embers that require extensive effort to locate and extinguish. Additionally, trees damaged by the fire pose a falling hazard to the emergency crews. Residents in Alzenau, Bavaria, have been advised to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke, and to avoid the affected area. The integrated control center for the Main-Kinzig district issued warnings via Katwarn, urging the public to stay clear and shut down ventilation and air conditioning systems.

To ensure an adequate water supply for the ongoing operations, multiple water reservoirs have been established in the forest, with tanker trucks continuously refilling them. The wind continues to cause flare-ups, making the containment efforts particularly difficult. Access roads to the fire site must be kept clear for emergency vehicles.

In a separate, smaller incident northeast of Holzhammer in Bavaria's Oberpfalz region, a wildfire affecting over 1,000 square meters was rapidly brought under control. This effort saw unique support from local farmers who utilized slurry tankers filled with water to aid the firefighting. Around 160 personnel, including 120 firefighters, were involved in this operation. One firefighter sustained a minor injury after twisting an ankle in the difficult terrain. The Bergwacht (mountain rescue) and THW (Federal Agency for Technical Relief) were also present, using quads to navigate the inaccessible forest.
