The University of Indonesia Student Executive Board (BEM UI) is currently deliberating its stance on a planned demonstration scheduled for August 27, 2026, organized by the United Pati Community Alliance (AMPB). BEM UI's chairperson, Yatalathof Ma'shum Imawan, stated that the organization is in coordination with AMPB to understand the protest's core demands and the participating groups. This clarification is crucial for BEM UI to determine whether it will actively join the rally or offer support through social media. "If we coordinate, it will be today. Their demands are clear," said Athof, as Yatalathof is commonly known, on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. He indicated that some BEM UI members have expressed a desire to participate physically. The AMPB's demonstration aims to push for the immediate enactment of the Asset Forfeiture Bill and the imposition of the death penalty for corrupt officials. Athof acknowledged these demands as legitimate expressions of public rights and highlighted BEM UI's view on the urgent need to strengthen anti-corruption enforcement. However, BEM UI also emphasizes that combating corruption requires more than just specific demands; it necessitates strengthening law enforcement institutions. The organization plans to make its final decision after internal deliberations, with the earliest possible announcement set for August 26. Athof also cited the government's perceived lack of response to previous student demonstrations as a factor influencing BEM UI's considerations.
