Wimbledon Champions Ousted as Aldila Sutjiadi Stuns Mladenovic-Guo in Toronto

Indonesian tennis player Aldila Sutjiadi and her partner Erin Routliffe of New Zealand achieved a significant upset at the WTA 1000 National Bank Open in Toronto. They eliminated the fourth-seeded Wimbledon champions, Kristina Mladenovic of France and Hanyu Guo of China, in the first round.

The unseeded Indonesian-New Zealand duo secured their spot in the Round of 16 after a challenging two-hour and three-minute match, winning 6-3, 6-7(4), 10-5. They demonstrated strong performance from the start, clinching the first set decisively.

Despite a comeback from Mladenovic and Guo in the second set, which led to a tiebreak, Aldila and Routliffe maintained their composure. They played more consistently in the deciding super tiebreak, ultimately winning 10-5. Statistics highlighted their effectiveness, converting five of seven break points compared to their opponents' three of 11. They also served with greater accuracy, recording three aces against their opponents' zero.

This win extends Aldila and Routliffe's recent success, following their title victory at the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington the previous week. Their unseeded status in Toronto was due to seedings being based on rankings before their Washington win. They are set to face Olivia Nicholls and Tereza Mihalikova in the Round of 16.
