Windstorm Ravages NYSC Orientation Camp; Niger Governor Orders Repairs

Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has mandated the swift repair of structures devastated by a windstorm at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Paiko. The storm, which struck on April 25, 2026, caused significant damage to essential facilities, including male corps members' hostels, the Multi-Purpose Hall, and the kitchen, though thankfully, no injuries were reported.

The governor expressed concern over the unfortunate incident, acknowledging the disruption it caused to the corps members and camp officials. An assessment team, comprising state commissioners and NYSC officials, has already surveyed the extent of the damage. The governor's directive for immediate repairs underscores his administration's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the corps members serving in the state.

The affected buildings are male corps members’ hostels, the Multi-Purpose Hall, the kitchen, the staff quarters, and some parts of the state coordinator’s residence.

Governor Bago also commended the collaborative efforts of the assessment team and the principal of Abubakar Dada Secondary School for providing temporary classroom accommodations. He reassured the NYSC of continued support, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a conducive environment for the orientation course. This incident, while unfortunate, highlights the state government's proactive response to ensuring the smooth continuation of the NYSC program.
