With PNM Mekaar, an Old Sewing Machine Supports 5 Families

In Surabaya, Indonesia, Utari, a 58-year-old woman, has become the primary breadwinner for her five-person household through her sewing skills. Her journey began in 2019 when her husband suffered a serious accident, rendering him unable to work, coinciding with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Facing financial hardship, Utari turned to her only existing skill: sewing. A neighbor introduced her to PNM Mekaar, a microfinance program. She received an initial loan of Rp 2 million, using Rp 1 million to purchase a used sewing machine and the remainder for raw materials. This investment allowed her to start a business producing souvenir bags, which have since garnered orders from various regions.

Seven years later, Utari's loan has grown to Rp 8 million. Her business success has enabled her to fund her two children's university education and create employment opportunities for four local women. These five individuals now work together to manage production, showcasing how empowering one woman can stimulate the surrounding economy.

Kindaris, the President Director of PNM, recognized Utari's resilience, highlighting her transformation from a housewife with nothing to a self-reliant entrepreneur. He emphasized that PNM's empowerment programs are not just about financial figures but about providing opportunities for underprivileged women to improve their lives and those of their families. Utari's story exemplifies how timely financial support can create a ripple effect, benefiting not only the individual but also their community. As of 2026, PNM Mekaar has served over 23 million customers across 36 provinces, with 74% reporting increased income and 90% experiencing financial independence.
