Woman dies as car crashes into building in Lagos

A fatal accident occurred along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ikeja, Lagos, when a woman driving a Toyota Sienna crashed into a roadside building. The sole occupant of the vehicle, the woman was driving with registration number LND 162 HB when the incident happened over the weekend.

According to a statement released by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), initial investigations indicate that the victim lost control of her car, causing it to veer off the road and collide with the building. LASTMA officials, who were on routine patrol, responded swiftly to secure the scene. They placed safety cones around the affected area to prevent further accidents and ensure the safety of other road users during the recovery operation.

The crash caused a temporary disruption to traffic flow, but LASTMA officials managed to restore normal movement after intervening. Police officers from the Afonka Police Post also assisted LASTMA personnel in the evacuation process.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, used the tragic event to emphasize the severe risks associated with excessive speed and negligent driving. "No destination is worth the ultimate sacrifice of human life," he stated, urging all motorists to exercise prudence, patience, and adhere strictly to traffic regulations. He further advised drivers to maintain speed limits, drive cautiously, and conduct pre-trip vehicle checks, stressing that mechanical faults should be addressed before driving.

This incident occurs amidst ongoing concerns about road safety in Lagos. The agency reported that in 2025, LASTMA rescued 1,075 injured crash victims and impounded 17,169 vehicles for various traffic violations, including reckless driving and mechanical defects. The agency extended its condolences to the deceased's family and friends.
