Woman donates NT$6 million in scholarships over 23 years to support disadvantaged students

For 23 consecutive years, Lin Ching-jung has dedicated herself to supporting disadvantaged students, donating a total of NT$6 million in scholarships through the North Kaohsiung Home for Families. As the summer vacation concludes, many families face the challenge of tuition fees, and the center is distributing these scholarships to ease the financial burden on university students.

The North Kaohsiung Home for Families currently supports nearly 2,600 households and 4,600 children. According to its chairman, Li Chi-lun, the center provides around NT$14 million in scholarships annually to its supported university students. These funds come from donations by enthusiastic corporations and individuals connected through the Home for Families foundation.

Lin Ching-jung, whose father was a former town mayor, was inspired by his commitment to community service. Even after marrying and moving to Taichung, she has continued her philanthropic efforts, now joined by her husband. She expressed joy in seeing the children she initially supported reach adulthood and shared her satisfaction in persevering with her donations.

"I am very happy to have persisted all these years," Lin said. "Seeing the children strive bravely toward the next stage of their lives each year brings me great comfort. I am glad I did not disappoint my father."

Wu Rui-hua, director of the North Kaohsiung Home for Families, emphasized the role of education in breaking cycles of poverty. The center welcomes further support from individuals wishing to contribute to their cause.
