Woman pries open window to save paralyzed brother from house fire

A dramatic rescue unfolded in Tumpat, Malaysia, when a woman's quick thinking and determination saved her paralyzed brother from a raging house fire. Siti Nor Azizan Mustafa, 40, acted decisively by prying open a metal window frame with a crowbar to pull her brother, Muhammad Fazli Mustafa, 35, to safety.

The fire broke out in a prayer room of their semi-permanent home in Kampung Kubu, Telaga Bata, around 3 p.m. Siti Nor Azizan was asleep when she awoke to the unfolding disaster. Upon discovering the burning room, she shouted for help, alerting her husband, mother, and father.

As soon as I opened the door, I found the room was already on fire. I screamed as loud as I could for help, and my scream was heard by my husband, mother, and father.

While her mother helped evacuate her father, who uses a wheelchair, Siti Nor Azizan heard her brother's cries for help from inside the burning structure. Without hesitation, she used a piece of wood to force open the window, enabling her to rescue her brother. Muhammad Fazli sustained burns to his abdomen and experienced breathing difficulties, requiring treatment at Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II.

Siti Nor Azizan also suffered minor injuries during the rescue. Her husband, Muhamad Talmizi Razali, 41, sustained burns to his back and legs while assisting in the rescue efforts. The Pengkalan Kubor Fire and Rescue Station reported that the fire caused approximately 70% damage to the house. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
