The exorbitant prices for tickets and travel are creating a perfect storm, turning devoted supporters into easy prey for sophisticated online scams. Nuno Sebastiao, CEO of Feedzai, a financial crime prevention company, highlights that while large sporting events always attract fraudsters, the current situation is particularly dire. The sheer cost of attending matches, with final tickets reaching nearly $11,000 on official channels, pushes fans to seek alternatives, a vulnerability that criminals are ruthlessly exploiting. This is especially concerning given that many football fans may not have the high disposable incomes seen in other sports, making them more susceptible to 'too good to be true' offers. The situation has escalated to the point where fan associations have formally complained to the European Commission, accusing FIFA of monopolistic practices and a "monumental betrayal" through its pricing strategy. The report by The Knoble network estimates over 28,500 suspicious financial transactions globally linked to the World Cup, with ticket sales, travel, and general online scams being the primary areas of concern. Fans are warned that all 2026 World Cup tickets will be exclusively mobile, making any offer of printed tickets or screenshots a definitive sign of fraud.
