Wye joins Drua

The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua has bolstered its backline with the signing of Flying Fijians half-back Sam Wye for the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season. Wye's arrival marks a significant addition to the team, bringing a wealth of experience gained through New Zealand's provincial rugby system and his international appearances for Fiji.

Wye, who has connections to the Lau province, previously represented Auckland, Hawke’s Bay, and Counties Manukau in New Zealand's National Provincial Championship. He made his Super Rugby Pacific debut in 2023 for Moana Pasifika. The 25-year-old expressed his excitement about joining the "Drua Vuvale" and is eager to contribute from next year.

I’m excited to be part of the Drua Vuvale for the upcoming 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season. I’m truly grateful for this opportunity and I’m looking forward to getting stuck in it next year with the boys.

His international career gained momentum in 2025 when he was selected for the Flying Fijians squad for Test series against Australia and Scotland, making his debut against Scotland in Suva. He continued his national team involvement in 2026, participating in the Nations Championship. Wye's father, Filipe Wye, was also a national football representative for Fiji in the 1990s, continuing a family sporting legacy.

Baden Stephenson, General Manager Rugby for Fijian Drua, highlighted Wye as an "exciting addition" and a "talented half-back who plays with great energy." Stephenson noted Wye's development in New Zealand's rugby environment, his Super Rugby Pacific experience, and his step onto the international stage. He believes Wye has significant potential for further growth within the Drua setup, particularly in his ability to "lift the tempo of a game."

Sam is an exciting addition to our Drua Vuvale. He is a talented half-back who plays with great energy and has worked extremely hard for every opportunity that has come his way. He has developed through a very good rugby environment in New Zealand, has experienced Super Rugby Pacific and has now stepped into the international arena with the Flying Fijians. We’re excited about what he can bring to our group. He works hard around the field and has the ability to lift the tempo of a game. We believe there is plenty more growth in him and we’re looking forward to seeing him develop further in the Drua environment.
