Xavi Hernandez is embarking on a new chapter in his coaching career, having officially been appointed as the head coach of the Netherlands national team. The former Barcelona and Spain legend has agreed to a contract that extends through the 2030 World Cup, succeeding Ronald Koeman, who departed after a disappointing World Cup 2026 performance. The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) announced Xavi's appointment on Thursday, August 13, 2026. This marks Xavi's return to management after a two-year hiatus since leaving Barcelona in 2024. He stated that he considers the role an "extraordinary honor" and feels a special connection to Dutch football. Xavi credits the influence of Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels from his time at Barcelona's academy for his appreciation of the Oranje's football philosophy. He also acknowledged the significant role Dutch coaches like Louis van Gaal, who gave him his Barcelona debut, and Frank Rijkaard played in his development. Notably, Xavi previously succeeded Koeman as Barcelona's coach in 2021, leading them to a La Liga title in the 2022/23 season. Now, he faces the challenge of rebuilding the Dutch squad, which was eliminated in the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup after a loss to Morocco.
