Yobe APC gov aspirants reject consensus, demand primary election

A significant internal rift appears to be brewing within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yobe State, as six prominent governorship aspirants have publicly denounced the alleged endorsement of a consensus candidate. This move, reportedly spearheaded by Governor Mai Mala Buni, is seen by the aggrieved aspirants as a blatant disregard for democratic principles and established party procedures, potentially jeopardizing the party's unity ahead of the 2027 elections.

The purported endorsement of a particular candidate as the APC governorship consensus candidate does not conform with the requirements and provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the APC Constitution. No individual or group has the authority to impose a candidate on party members without following due process.

The aspirants, a notable group including former Inspector-General of Police Usman Alkali Baba and Senator Ibrahim Bomai, have voiced strong objections, asserting that the purported consensus process contravenes both the Electoral Act and the APC's own constitution. Their statement emphasizes that imposing a candidate without broad consultation and adherence to due process is unacceptable and could foster division. This stance underscores a commitment to internal democracy and fairness for all contenders within the party.

We are loyal members of the APC and have worked for the growth and stability of the party over the years. Any attempt to sideline aspirants and deny party members the right to participate in a transparent process will create unnecessary tension and dissatisfaction among stakeholders.

From the perspective of these aspirants, the issue transcends personal ambition; it is about safeguarding the integrity of the democratic process within the APC. They are advocating for a transparent and credible selection mechanism, proposing a direct primary election as the most viable option if a genuine consensus cannot be reached among all aspirants. This call for adherence to the Electoral Act and party constitution highlights their determination to ensure that the candidate who emerges truly represents the will of the party members and supporters across Yobe State, thereby avoiding potential disputes and fostering a sense of belonging.
