'You Are Not My Heir', Music Legend Mapfumo Chides Makore and Bans Him From Performing His Music

Chimurenga music icon Thomas Mapfumo has formally prohibited his nephew, Kurai Makore, from performing his songs, citing copyright infringement. Mapfumo's legal team issued a cease-and-desist order, asserting that Makore is not authorized to perform, record, stream, or commercially exploit any musical works belonging to Mapfumo's catalogue, which is exclusively controlled by Chimurenga Music Company.

This serves as the final and unequivocal notice that Mr Kurai Makore is not authorised - and has never been authorised - to perform, record, stream, or commercially exploit any musical works belonging to the catalogue of Thomas Mapfumo, which is exclusively owned and controlled by Chimurenga Music Company.

The order explicitly states that despite repeated personal warnings from Mapfumo to forge his own artistic path, Makore has remained defiant. Mapfumo's representatives characterized Makore's persistent performance of copyrighted material without a license as a "blatant and wilful legal violation that can no longer be tolerated," distinguishing it from a mere family dispute.

Recent media reports had touted Makore as the potential heir to the Chimurenga music legacy, a genre that has seen reduced activity since Mapfumo's own output slowed in Zimbabwe. However, the legal notice vehemently dismissed these claims, labeling them as "falsehoods" peddled by "mischievous media outlets." Mapfumo has never designated an heir, by blood or decree.

"In African culture and in the arts, it is the people, the fans, the nation, and history itself, who ultimately decide who carries the mantle of a legend," the order read. It clarified that an invitation for Makore to open for Mapfumo on a few shows was misrepresented as a "handing down of a torch." Mapfumo asserted that any artist is free to play any music, but no one is authorized to play his music without copyright clearance, and no individual or media house can manufacture or bestow such a title.
