Zimbabwe Defence Forces and Mutapa Gold Resources deliver new classroom block to ease school congestion

A new classroom block has been inaugurated at Mubvundudzi Primary School in Mt Darwin, Zimbabwe, a joint effort by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) and Mutapa Gold Resources (MGR). This project, part of the annual Community Assistance Week, aims to alleviate severe classroom shortages that previously limited the school's capacity and forced some children to travel long distances.

The new classroom block will increase the school's enrollment capacity to over 400 learners, effectively doubling its current capacity while providing a conducive learning environment.

Mutapa Gold Resources financed the construction, while the ZDF provided technical expertise through its Artillery Brigade. Local community members contributed labor and materials like sand and water. The project was initiated in September 2024 after authorities identified a critical need for more learning space. Previously, the school could only accommodate around 220 pupils, compelling many from surrounding villages to walk nearly 10 kilometers to the nearest alternative school.

General Emmanuel Matatu, Commander of the ZDF, stated that the new block will more than double the school's enrollment capacity to over 400 learners, providing a much-needed conducive learning environment. He emphasized that the initiative reflects a shared commitment among the military, private sector, and local communities to enhance education and national development, aligning with the government's Vision 2030 goals for universal education access.

The classroom will improve attendance, create a safer and more conducive learning environment and renew excitement for education among our young people.

Patrick Shayawabaya, CEO of MGR, highlighted the project's potential to improve educational quality and create a better learning atmosphere. He noted that the improved facilities would likely boost attendance, enhance safety, and rekindle enthusiasm for learning among students. Shayawabaya also announced a donation of 10 computers and reading materials, along with the electrification of the school, which will support extended study hours, lesson preparation, digital learning, and administrative functions. He underscored the value of the partnership with the ZDF in delivering these improvements.
