Zema to stay in presidential race despite skipping debate

Romeu Zema, a presidential candidate, will not withdraw from the race despite his absence from a key televised debate, according to an ally within his party. Zema announced he would skip the TV Bandeirantes debate on Sunday evening.

He stated his decision was prompted by the announced absence of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and "other competitors," a reference to Flávio Bolsonaro, who was also expected not to participate. Zema's campaign has struggled for visibility, polling at 3% in a recent Datafolha survey and having limited access to free TV campaign advertising.

The debate represented one of Zema's few opportunities for significant television exposure. His invitation to the event was considered a concession by organizers, as he is not legally obligated to be invited. His absence fueled speculation that he might withdraw and endorse another candidate, but a party official firmly denied any such possibility.

The debate is now expected to feature only Ronaldo Caiado, Renan Santos, and Augusto Cury. Zema's party maintains that he is committed to his candidacy and will not step aside.
