Zidane Officially Announces French National Team Coaching Staff, Including Fabien Barthez

Zinedine Zidane has officially unveiled the composition of his coaching staff following his appointment as the head coach of the French national team, taking over from Didier Deschamps. A significant name returning to the Les Bleus fold is former legendary French goalkeeper Fabien Barthez, who will be responsible for the goalkeeping sector.

The French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed the initial lineup of Zidane's staff on Thursday, August 13, 2026, with FFF President Philippe Diallo approving the appointments based on Zidane's direct recommendations. Barthez's inclusion is a key highlight, bringing his extensive experience to the new structure. Zidane and Barthez share a history as key figures in France's golden generation of players, having achieved international success together.

Zidane has also brought in long-time collaborators, including David Bettoni as an assistant coach, who previously worked closely with Zidane during his tenure at Real Madrid. Hamidou Msaidie joins as another assistant coach, while Stephane Plancque will serve as a talent scout and tactical analyst. Gregory Dupont has been appointed as a strategy and performance advisor, with Farid Tabet taking on roles as assistant coach and video/data analyst. Clement Ybert completes the analysis team as an assistant video analyst.

The FFF indicated that further additions to the staff structure are planned, including a special liaison officer to be appointed through an agreement between the FFF and the Ministry of the Interior. The medical department is also set up, led by Dr. Herve Collado, supported by osteopath Philippe Boixel and podiatrist Marc Retali. Physiotherapists Maxime Matton and Paul Olive will ensure players maintain peak physical condition during international commitments.

Notably absent from the initial announcement was former French winger Bernard Diomede, who had been rumored to join Zidane's staff. The FFF stated that additional staff members will be announced later, suggesting a comprehensive and experienced team is being assembled to support Zidane's vision for the French national team.
