Zverev's elimination and Auger-Aliassime's withdrawal leave Canada without any Top 5 players

The ATP Masters 1000 Canada tournament has been significantly depleted, with all players ranked in the world's Top 5 now out of contention. The latest blows came with the second-round elimination of Germany's Alexander Zverev and the withdrawal of Canada's Félix Auger-Aliassime due to a back injury.

Zverev, the world number two and the tournament's top seed and favorite, suffered an unexpected defeat in his opening match against the Netherlands' Tallon Griekspoor, ranked 69th. The match lasted two hours and 34 minutes, with Griekspoor winning 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-4.

Auger-Aliassime, ranked fourth globally and the second seed, was forced to pull out before his debut match. Their exits add to a growing list of top-ranked players who have departed the tournament early. This includes Italy's Jannik Sinner, Spain's Carlos Alcaraz, and Serbia's Novak Djokovic, who were already out of the running.

The highest-ranked players remaining in the draw are Russia's Daniil Medvedev, currently sixth in the world, who has yet to play his second-round match, and Australia's Alex de Miñaur, ranked seventh, who has advanced to the third round. The second round also saw the departure of two other Top 10 players: American Taylor Fritz (No. 8) and Italy's Flavio Cobolli (No. 9).
