About NPR

NPR (National Public Radio) is an American public broadcasting organization, established in 1970 by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which was created by an act of Congress. It operates as a private, nonprofit membership organization, owned by its network of member public radio stations. Funding for NPR comes from member station fees, corporate underwriting, grants from foundations, individual contributions, and until 2025, annual grants from the publicly funded CPB.

AllSides rates NPR's online news as 'Lean Left' with medium confidence, noting a focus on the political right in its fact-checking. Ad Fontes Media, however, rates NPR's website in the 'Middle' category of bias and as 'Reliable, Analysis/Fact Reporting'. NPR has faced criticism for perceived ideological bias, including allegations of a progressive worldview, particularly highlighted by a former senior editor, Uri Berliner, who resigned in April 2024 after criticizing the outlet's coverage of topics such as the Trump presidency and other political issues. NPR management and many staffers have disputed these claims.
