287 nominations submitted for Nobel Peace Prize

The Norwegian Nobel Institute has unveiled the nominations for this year's prestigious Nobel Peace Prize, with a total of 287 submissions, including 208 individuals and 79 organizations. While this figure is lower than the record set in 2016, the institute emphasizes that the number remains consistently high, indicating a global landscape rich with individuals and groups dedicated to fostering a brighter future amidst increasing global conflicts.

In accordance with Nobel statutes, the specific identities of the nominees are kept confidential for a period of 50 years. However, those eligible to nominate—such as former laureates, lawmakers, cabinet ministers worldwide, and certain university professors—are at liberty to disclose the names they have put forward. This year, several prominent figures and institutions have been publicly named as nominees, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, and international bodies like the International Criminal Court.

Notably, some individuals have also revealed their nominations of former US President Donald Trump, who had actively campaigned for the prize based on his perceived efforts to end several wars. Trump's past frustration at being overlooked for the prize, which instead honored Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, is a matter of public record. Machado, in an unusual gesture, even dedicated her award to Trump and presented him with her prize medal. The Nobel Peace Prize committee, however, has consistently stressed that the medal itself is not the prize, and the honor is intrinsically linked to the recipient.

The nomination deadline is January 31 each year, with committee members having the option to add candidates during their first meeting after the deadline, which this year occurred on February 26.
