40 Tons of Cocaine: Largest Drug Seizure in Europe

In a stunning operation, Spanish authorities have intercepted a vessel carrying an astonishing 30 tons of cocaine, a seizure of unprecedented scale in Europe. The ship, sailing under the flag of the Comoros, was intercepted by the Guardia Civil near the Canary Islands, thwarting a massive smuggling attempt with an estimated street value of over 812 million euros.

This monumental bust surpasses the previous European record of 25 tons, confiscated in Germany's Hamburg port in June 2024. The sheer volume of narcotics suggests a sophisticated operation, with investigators believing the cocaine was destined to be transferred to speedboats for distribution to the Spanish mainland.

The 23 individuals on board the 'Arconian' have been detained and are currently in custody. Their nationalities are diverse, including crew members from the Netherlands and Suriname, alongside 17 sailors from the Philippines.
