97% of Nigeria's ambassador-designates accepted by host countries, FG says

Nigeria's Federal Government has confirmed that 97% of its ambassador-designate appointments have received formal acceptance from host countries, signaling smooth progress in the nation's diplomatic outreach. Out of 69 individuals appointed by President Bola Tinubu, 65 have been approved, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The ministry, through its spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, addressed public concerns regarding potential delays in the accreditation process. It clarified that only two countries are pending in providing their formal consent, known as agrément, a standard international diplomatic practice. The government expressed confidence that these outstanding approvals would be granted shortly.

Further details revealed that one ambassador-designate, initially appointed to Togo, declined the position before the agrément request was submitted. Additionally, the nominee for Algeria passed away in April 2026, prompting an ongoing process to appoint a replacement. These circumstances account for the slight variance from a full 100% acceptance rate.

Most of Nigeria's newly appointed ambassadors have already arrived in their respective host nations and presented their Letters of Credence. The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to bolstering Nigeria's international representation to advance the country's foreign policy objectives and safeguard national interests abroad.
