Activist Tamim Dahri to face charges in Langkawi court

Activist Tamim Dahri Abdul Razak faces renewed legal scrutiny in Langkawi, where he is scheduled to be charged in the Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. Police re-arrested the 47-year-old activist to face charges under Section 295 of the Penal Code, which pertains to intentionally insulting a religion or religious beliefs.

This latest development follows a prior detention in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, where Razak was held for two days pending investigations into offenses under Section 506 of the Penal Code (criminal intimidation) and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. After his initial remand period concluded, the Langkawi District Police Criminal Investigation Division apprehended him again in connection with a police report filed in Kuah.

Authorities had previously issued a Red Notice through Interpol in July, seeking to locate Razak after he allegedly damaged Hindu religious objects in Langkawi in March. Kedah Police Commissioner Datuk Adzli Abu Shah stated that the suspect, then listed as a wanted person, had left the country shortly after the incident. He was charged in absentia at the Langkawi Magistrate's Court on March 17 for allegedly damaging the religious items.

Despite the earlier charges, Razak failed to appear for a subsequent court hearing on May 17, prompting the issuance of an arrest warrant against him. He was apprehended in Godean, Sleman, and subsequently brought to the Srandakan Police Station for further investigation and legal proceedings.
