After beating Alekna again, Čeh sends a clear message: I want to beat him at home

Kristjan Čeh had praise for Mykolas Alekna after beating him in the Diamond League final, but he also made his next ambition clear: he wants to defeat the world-record holder in Lithuania.

Alekna threw 70.14 meters in Brussels to take silver. His third-round effort briefly improved the meeting record, but the mark lasted only a few minutes. Čeh responded with a 71.29-meter throw, reclaimed the competition record and won the Diamond League trophy four years after his previous triumph.

Jamaica’s Roje Stona, the Paris Olympic champion, finished third with 68.86 meters. Čeh said he had not shown his full ability at the start of the competition, but trusted that he could throw beyond 70 meters. “I am happy with the victory and with achieving the last goal of the season,” he told RTV Slovenija. “It was a good competition, the rivalry was exceptional, and the atmosphere in the stadium was very good.”

The Brussels result marked another important win over Alekna for Čeh this season. At the European Championships in Birmingham, Čeh won gold with 72.51 meters, while Alekna placed second with 69.89 meters. Even so, Čeh described Alekna as a formidable competitor who pushes him to improve. “He is an exceptionally good discus thrower, with stable technique for many years,” Čeh said. “It is good to compete with him. We motivate each other and push each other.”

The next meeting comes on September 12 in Vilnius. The event will bring together the top three finishers from the Brussels final, including Alekna, Čeh and Stona. Čeh said he was in good form and had not yet shown everything he could do. “I want to beat him at his home competition,” he said.
