After ultimatum, grill, and new club in Sejm: PiS storm is just beginning

Poland's ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party is facing a deepening internal crisis, with a significant split poised to create a new parliamentary club. The move, spearheaded by former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, signals that the party's internal divisions are far from over, despite recent declarations of unity.

A political committee meeting is scheduled to formally expel members who refused to sign a loyalty pledge. Simultaneously, the Sejm's final session before the summer recess is expected to witness the establishment of a new club, likely built around Morawiecki's "Rozwój Plus" association. Morawiecki himself has announced plans for a nationwide tour, indicating his intention to solidify his faction's base.

This internal schism threatens to strip PiS of its position as the largest club in the Sejm. Currently boasting 186 members, the party could lose over thirty parliamentarians, ceding its top spot to the Civic Coalition. The repercussions extend beyond mere numbers, potentially affecting Sejm seating arrangements and the club's operational funding, which is calculated based on membership.

While some within Morawiecki's circle reportedly received signals from within PiS to consider remaining in the current club, the momentum appears to favor a split. The situation is further inflamed by public disputes, such as a recent critical statement by Jacek Kurski against Morawiecki, highlighting the intense emotions and political maneuvering at play.

The matter is simple: the vast majority of the club today has declared that they are not in any association. Anyone can make such a declaration, and if someone doesn't make it, they can act outside the Law and Justice party, but still be in the club. Such solutions are also possible, these are my imaginings. However, I demand unity, unity of the entire Law and Justice environment.
