Akpabio threatens sanctions as Oshiomhole protests rule change

A dramatic scene unfolded in the Nigerian Senate as Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Adams Oshiomhole engaged in a heated exchange over the interpretation of newly amended Standing Rules. The disruption, which lasted approximately ten minutes, highlighted underlying tensions within the legislative body regarding procedural matters and potentially, future political maneuvering.

The clash occurred when Oshiomhole attempted to raise a point of order while Akpabio was reading the Votes and Proceedings. Akpabio, citing the Senate Standing Orders 2023 (as amended), ruled Oshiomhole out of order, emphasizing that points of order are not permitted at that stage. Despite this, Oshiomhole persisted, leading to further interventions from other senators, including Orji Uzor Kalu, who was called upon by Akpabio to clarify the rules. The Chief Whip, Tahir Monguno, issued a stern warning to Oshiomhole, threatening sanctions if he continued to be unruly.

These changes, which mandate strict ranking for nominations to presiding offices and require at least two consecutive terms for eligibility to principal offices, are widely perceived as measures designed to influence the composition of the National Assembly ahead of the 2027 general elections. With many governors nearing the end of their tenures, the race for Senate seats is intensifying, and these rule changes appear to be a strategic move to shape the political landscape.
