Andros: Corsage C wreck located at 40 meters; investigations and dives underway for causes

A significant maritime incident has occurred off the coast of Andros, with the wreck of the cargo ship Corsage C located at a depth of around 40 meters. The Hellenic Coast Guard is actively investigating the causes of this unfortunate event, while a comprehensive anti-pollution operation is in full swing to mitigate any environmental impact in the surrounding waters.

Initial assessments indicate that the ship was carrying approximately 8,000 metric tons of soda and had departed from an Albanian port bound for Ukraine. It is believed to have struck a rocky area, leading to severe hull damage and substantial water ingress, ultimately causing its sinking. The remaining diesel fuel in the ship's tanks, estimated at 6 to 7 cubic meters, is considered manageable by the deployed anti-pollution assets.

Specialized diving teams are scheduled to conduct underwater inspections to assess the condition of the hull. Concurrently, the ship's insurance company has been notified and is being kept informed of the ongoing operations and subsequent required actions. In connection with the incident, the captain and a bridge officer of the vessel have been arrested as part of the preliminary investigation.
