Anwar thanks Zahid for unity government support

MELAKA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has lauded UMNO President Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for his commitment to the unity government, expressing deep appreciation for his support in forming the coalition.

Anwar, who is also PKR President, extended his gratitude to Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and leaders from Sabah for endorsing the government's formation. He acknowledged that while differing views exist among the parties within the unity government, all members must understand that reforms require a phased approach.

He noted that some parties had urged for immediate, sweeping changes, a feat they themselves did not accomplish when in power.

Anwar emphasized that the unity government must prioritize its reform agenda while ensuring political stability, national security, and public welfare. He cautioned against hasty actions, citing the example of Caliph Umar Abdul Aziz, who implemented changes gradually despite his resolve to combat corruption and uphold justice. He reiterated that a phased approach does not signify a delay in reforms but rather ensures their effective execution. While acknowledging that some reforms have been implemented during the unity government's three-year tenure, Anwar admitted that much remains to be done. "Has everything been completed? No. There are still hundreds of changes that need to be made. I am not defending everything we have done. I admit there are still shortcomings," he concluded.
