Argentina reinforces security for public gatherings after World Cup final

Argentine authorities are implementing enhanced security measures nationwide in anticipation of massive public gatherings following the 2026 World Cup final match against Spain.

In the capital, Buenos Aires, a significant police presence from the City Police will be deployed. This will be complemented by police helicopter flyovers and real-time monitoring via the Urban Monitoring Center's cameras and drones. Traffic will be restricted in the city center, and cordons will be established around the Obelisco, a traditional focal point for large public celebrations.

The most populous province, Buenos Aires, will see increased police presence, particularly in the cities of La Plata and Mar del Plata. In Córdoba, the country's second-most populous province, approximately 1,000 personnel from provincial, national, and municipal forces will participate in the security operation in the provincial capital. Notably, the sale of alcoholic beverages will be prohibited from two hours before the match until midnight on Sunday.

In Santa Fe, the third most populous province, the provincial government and the municipality of Rosario, Leo Messi's hometown, have agreed to bolster security, especially around the National Monument to the Flag. This area saw an estimated 400,000 people gather after Argentina's victory over England earlier in the week. Meanwhile, the government of Mendoza province, the fourth most populous, is deploying 3,000 police officers. They are also suspending urban bus services after the match and overseeing 22 parties authorized for Sunday night's "Friend's Day" celebrations.
