Argentine Legislator Returns After Release from Israeli Detention, Denounces Mistreatment

Buenos Aires, Argentina – Legislator Pablo Giachello of the Buenos Aires province has returned to Argentina after his release from detention by Israeli forces. Giachello, a member of the Global Flotilla Sumud, which was intercepted en route to Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid, arrived at Ezeiza International Airport on Sunday.

Upon his return, Giachello denounced the treatment he received, describing his detention as a period of being held incommunicado and subjected to mistreatment. He detailed severe injuries sustained by fellow crew members, including head trauma, memory loss, a dislocated shoulder, broken ribs, and hypothermia, stating that their suffering was "just a glimpse" of what Palestinian prisoners endure.

In just 36 hours, we had seven colleagues with head trauma, two lost their memory, one dislocated their shoulder, two had broken ribs, and another suffered hypothermia.

The Flotilla, which departed from Barcelona on April 15th, was intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters on Thursday. Giachello, a provincial deputy for the Workers' Party-Left Front, used his return to demand the release of Palestinian-Spanish activist Saif Abukeshek and Brazilian crewmate Thiago Ávila, who remain in detention.

Legal center Adalah reported that the Ashkelon Magistrate's Court has extended the detention of Abukeshek and Ávila by two days. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges and risks faced by those attempting to deliver aid to Gaza and highlights the harsh realities of detention and the broader conflict.
