Audi takes inspiration from Australia, humanizing car interiors

Audi is signaling a significant shift in its interior design philosophy, moving away from the trend of overwhelming digital screens towards a more balanced and human-centric approach. This change is partly inspired by societal trends, including a growing recognition of the detrimental effects of excessive screen time and social media usage, particularly on younger generations.

The brand's new design language, dubbed "Strive for Clarity," reflects a conscious effort to reduce what is being called "digital noise" within the vehicle cabin. This involves not only limiting the number of screens but also reintroducing physical controls that offer tactile feedback, making it easier and safer for drivers to operate essential functions without diverting their attention from the road.

Large screens do not provide the best experience.

Massimo Frascella, Audi's Chief Creative Officer, has openly challenged the notion that more screens equate to a better user experience. He described large screens as "technology for technology's sake," suggesting that their proliferation has prioritized presentation and cost-efficiency over genuine driver usability. Frascella, who joined Audi in 2024 after significant design work on Land Rover models, is now spearheading this design evolution.

The "Strive for Clarity" concept, alongside another internal term "The Radical Next," is first showcased in the Audi Concept C. This concept car features a reduced number of screens, a return of physical controls, and an increased emphasis on the quality of materials used, aiming to create a more serene and intuitive interior environment. This move positions Audi as a pioneer in steering away from the "automotive madness" of recent years, prioritizing a return to a more grounded and user-friendly design.
