Berlin attack suspect Abdul Ballout had prior convictions for assault, extortion, and terror links

Abdul Ballout, a 21-year-old German citizen of Lebanese descent, is the suspect in a deadly vehicle attack that occurred in Berlin's Tiergarten park. The incident, which involved a van plowing into a crowd near the Berlin Pride festival followed by a knife attack, left one person dead and 29 injured. Authorities are investigating the incident as an apparent act of Islamist terrorism.

Ballout's criminal history, revealed by the Berlin General Prosecutor's Office and the Court of Appeal, includes convictions for assault in 2019 and extortion in 2020. He also had a documented desire to join the Islamic State (IS) and was previously detained in Lebanon for three months in 2025 for inciting religious conflict.

After serving his sentence in Lebanon, Ballout returned to Germany in late 2025. He was subsequently arrested at Berlin airport for allegedly preparing a serious act of violence against state security. A court sentenced him to nearly two years in prison on May 12, but the prosecution appealed for a non-suspended sentence. He was on conditional release and participating in a deradicalization program at the time of the attack.

Ballout died after police located him on Saturday. Officers opened fire when he reportedly ran towards them with a knife. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of accomplices and are questioning several individuals connected to Ballout.
