Bolsonaro undergoes shoulder surgery 'without complications'

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has undergone a surgical procedure on his right shoulder, with medical sources reporting the intervention as having proceeded "without complications." The surgery, an arthroscopic repair of the rotator cuff, took place at the DF Star hospital in Brasilia. Following the procedure, Bolsonaro was transferred to an intensive care unit for pain management and clinical observation.

This surgery was authorized by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is overseeing Bolsonaro's case. The authorization followed a favorable recommendation from the Attorney General's Office, based on medical reports indicating the necessity of the procedure to treat shoulder injuries sustained from a fall in January. At the time of the fall, Bolsonaro was already detained at the Federal Police Superintendence in Brasilia.

Bolsonaro, who led Brazil from 2019 to 2022, is currently serving a 27-year and three-month sentence for his role in a coup plot aimed at keeping him in power after losing the 2022 election. He has been under house arrest since March 27 for a 90-day period due to his delicate health condition, which previously led to hospitalization for severe bilateral bacterial pneumonia. The judge will evaluate whether Bolsonaro will continue under house arrest or return to prison after this period concludes. His health issues are often attributed by him and his supporters to a stabbing he suffered during the 2018 election campaign.
