Brazil's Democratic Christian Party names lawyer Clariana Barão as presidential candidate

The Democratic Christian Party (DC) has selected Clariana Barão, a lawyer from Mato Grosso, as its presidential candidate, the party announced Friday. This decision came after former minister Joaquim Barbosa withdrew his presidential bid. The DC had also considered former minister Aldo Rebelo earlier in the year, but he was sidelined.

Barão becomes the second woman to enter the presidential race, joining Samara Martins of the radical left party Unidade Popular (UP). The DC's convention is scheduled for August 2.

"Clariana represents the opportunity for Brazil to have, in this election, a female voice in the dispute for the Presidency," said João Caldas, the party's president. He acknowledged the DC has limited resources and will not have TV airtime. Barão stated her intention to be "the voice of thousands of women," emphasizing the need for a female candidate in a country where women constitute 52% of the electorate.
