Brother of fallen soldier identified through relic bearing his name

Authorities in La Hien commune, Thai Nguyen province, have successfully identified the next-of-kin of a fallen soldier, Duong Van Hai, thanks to a relic discovered during an exhumation. The discovery was made in Gia Lai province as part of efforts to identify martyrs' remains through DNA analysis.

The relic, an aluminum box, bore the inscription 'Duong Van Hai; village Lang - Na; commune La Hien; district Vo Nhai; Thai Nguyen province; born 1949; died Jan. 30, 1976.' This crucial piece of evidence led officials to Mr. Duong Van Khoi, a 70-year-old resident of La Hien commune, who claims to be the younger brother of the fallen soldier.

According to Mr. Pham Hong Quan, Chairman of the People's Committee of La Hien commune, Mr. Khoi's provided documentation and personal details align perfectly with the information found on the relic. Further verification involved speaking with Mr. Thuan, who was reportedly involved in burying the soldier and inscribing the details on the metal sheet. Mr. Thuan recalled that Duong Van Hai was initially buried near a large tree by a river in Sa Thay district, bordering the former Kon Tum province.

Mr. Khoi's family had previously attempted to locate their relative's grave in 2025, but the passage of time and changes to the landscape made the search difficult. The commune authorities have now guided the family to coordinate with the Provincial Military Command of Thai Nguyen to gather more information about the soldier's place of death and to complete the necessary procedures for official identification of the remains.
