Building Begins on Land Recovered After 20 Years of Usurpation

In a significant urban renewal initiative, Buenos Aires is transforming a site with a troubled past into a beacon of opportunity for its citizens. The plot at Avenida La Plata 2253, once a symbol of prolonged usurpation and neglect, is now slated for the construction of a modern residential building. For over two decades, this land, belonging to the Instituto de Vivienda de la Ciudad (IVC), was occupied by families, leading to a state of disrepair characterized by humidity, mold, and accumulated debris.

The recovery of this land by the city government marked a pivotal moment, with a clear objective: to provide accessible housing for the middle class and essential workers, specifically the officers of the City Police. This project directly addresses the housing deficit and aims to facilitate homeownership for those who have long been priced out of the market. The broader plan encompasses nearly 400 new homes across three southern Buenos Aires locations, including Villa Soldati and Constitución, with the Parque Chacabuco project representing a substantial investment of over US$4 million. The emphasis on providing affordable housing options, particularly for police officers with a separate loan line at a 7% fixed interest rate, reflects a commitment to supporting the city's workforce.

The statement by the Head of Government, Jorge Macri, that "with the money that was previously allocated to giving away housing, we are going to build homes for middle-class families and for police officers," encapsulates the shift in policy.
