C’River deputy governor’s convoy crashes, several injured

An accident involving the convoy of Cross River State Deputy Governor Dr. Peter Odey occurred on Sunday along the Ikom-Calabar highway near Ugep. The incident happened as the deputy governor and his entourage were returning to Calabar after attending an official engagement in Obanliku Local Government Area.

According to Mr. Fred Abua, the Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, the press crew vehicle and a Hilux pickup truck within the convoy were impacted. Abua stated that the accident resulted from brake failure in the press crew vehicle, causing its driver to veer off the road. He confirmed that the vehicle carrying the deputy governor was not directly involved and that Dr. Odey escaped unharmed.

However, reports indicate that several other members of the convoy sustained injuries. Another source suggested that the Government House press bus, carrying appointees and staff from the Deputy Governor's office, veered off its lane near an Army checkpoint in Ugep and collided with sandbag barricades, also attributing the cause to brake failure. Other vehicles in the convoy reportedly sustained damage.

The full extent of the injuries and damage to the vehicles could not be independently verified at the time of reporting. Efforts to obtain further details from other officials were unsuccessful.
