Cameras to detect speeding, illegal parking and wrong-side driving from August 18

The Highway Police in Bangladesh are set to implement a new AI-based automated fine system on the crucial Dhaka-Chattogram highway, beginning August 18. This initiative aims to leverage technology to enforce traffic rules more effectively and enhance road safety across the busy corridor.

Under the new system, advanced AI-enabled cameras will be deployed to automatically identify vehicles committing various traffic violations. These include speeding, illegal parking, and driving on the wrong side of the road. Once a violation is detected, the system will automatically send an SMS alert to the mobile phone number registered with the vehicle. The vehicle owner will then be required to pay the fine through designated mobile financial services, such as bKash and Nagad, following a specified procedure.

The Highway Police stated that this automated system is designed to ensure prompt detection of violations, maintain accurate records, and streamline the fine collection process, making it more transparent. Authorities anticipate that the implementation of this technology will significantly contribute to improving overall traffic discipline, raising public awareness about the importance of adhering to traffic regulations, and ultimately reducing the number of road accidents. The police have urged all passengers, transport owners, workers' leaders, and other stakeholders to cooperate with this new initiative for the benefit of all road users.
